Every year, TIME publishes its “Best Inventions” list to highlight innovations with the potential for real-world impact. In 2025, TIME selected Proprio Paradigm, a system that builds live digital twins of patients’ anatomy during surgery, for that distinction.

Proprio Paradigm is designed to support surgeons by creating a real-time map of the patient’s anatomy using arrays of sensors and AI. The goal is to reduce the need for additional traditional scans (thus less radiation exposure) and bring greater intra-operative clarity.

More than 1 million spine surgeries are performed annually in the U.S., yet the repeat surgery rate remains high. Proprio aims to combat that. The system is FDA-cleared and has been deployed at major medical centers.

Why It Matters
For hospitals and surgical teams striving toward better outcomes, enhanced intra-operative imaging and mapping can help reduce uncertainty, shorten procedure time, and improve alignment of instruments with patient anatomy. It’s an honor to be named one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2025 among other impressive innovators across industries.
